Über «Physical»

Bei der Drama-/Comedy-Serie «Physical» ist die australischen Schauspielerin Rose Byrne («Troy», «28 Weeks Later», «Knowing», «Damages») in der Hauptrolle zu sehen.

Die Serie stammt von «Almost Family»-Erschafferin Annie Weisman, Alexandra Cunningham («Dirty John») und den Tomorrow Studios. Das Drehbuch zur Serie stammt von Weisman, die bei der Serie auch als Showrunner fungiert. Weisman ist neben «Almost Family» vor allem auch für ihre Arbeit an «Desperate Housewives» bekannt.

Apple konnte die Drehbuchautorin und Produzentin im Frühling 2020 für einen zweijährigen Overall-Deal für Apple TV+ gewinnen. Neben «Physical» wird sie unter diesem Vertrag noch andere Inhalte für Apple produzieren.

«Physical» spielt in den Strand-Gemeinschaften Südkaliforniens der 1980er-Jahre. Erzählt wird darin, wie die Hauptfigur (Byrne) «in ihrem Leben als gequälte Hausfrau einen unkonventionellen Weg zurück zu mehr Macht findet: Durch die Welt des Aerobic».

Neben Byrne ist auch «House of Cards»-Star Paul Sparks zusammen mit Rory Scovel («The House»), Lou Taylor Pucci («American Horror Story»), Della Saba («Zootopia»), Dierdre Friel («New Amsterdam») und Ashley Liao («Fuller House») in der Dramedy «Physical» zu sehen.

Seitens Apple übersieht die Apple-TV-Plus-Managerin Michelle Lee («Director Domestic Programming») das Projekt.

Im Kalifornien der 80er-Jahre lebt die Hausfrau Sheila Rubin ein Leben in stiller Verzweiflung, geplagt von Dämonen und einer bösen inneren Stimme. Doch dann tritt Aerobic in ihre Welt – ein Sport, der ihr den Weg zu Selbstfindung und Erfolg zeigt.

Set in the idyllic but fragile beach paradise of sunny 1980s San Diego, “Physical” is a half-hour dark comedy following Sheila Rubin, a quietly tortured, seemingly dutiful housewife supporting her smart but controversial husband’s bid for state assembly. But behind closed doors, Sheila has her own darkly funny take on life she rarely lets the world see. She’s also battling a complex set of personal demons relating to her self-image… that is, until she finds release through the unlikeliest source: the world of aerobics. At first hooked on the exercise itself, Sheila’s real road to empowerment comes when she discovers a way to merge this newfound passion with the burgeoning technology of videotape to start a revolutionary business. The series tracks her epic journey from a stifled, overlooked enabler to a powerful, confident economic force, as Sheila transforms into someone we take for granted today (but was entirely radical at the time) — the female lifestyle guru.
